What Religion Can No Longer Give

This function was genuine and genuinely important. And in many communities — particularly those where religious participation remains high and where the institutional expressions of religion are closely aligned with the genuine values of their communities — it continues to serve this function effectively.
But the sociological trends of the modern world are unmistakable.
As education increases — as expressive individualism becomes more central to modern identity — as the diversity of available meaning systems makes it increasingly possible for human beings to find genuine community and genuine meaning outside traditional religious frameworks — the proportion of human beings for whom organized religion serves as the primary source of social identity and moral framework is declining.
This is not — as some religious voices suggest — simply a failure of moral seriousness or spiritual commitment. It is a genuine sociological development driven by genuine changes in the conditions of human life. And honest engagement with it requires acknowledging what it means.
It means that the frameworks of social cohesion that religious traditions provided for thousands of years are no longer adequate — by themselves — to serve the genuine social needs of increasingly diverse — increasingly educated — and increasingly globally connected human populations.
Something else is needed. Something that can provide the genuine community — the genuine shared purpose — and the genuine moral framework that human beings genuinely need — without requiring the acceptance of supernatural claims that an increasing proportion of human beings cannot honestly accept.
The Problem of Psychological Certainty
One of the most important things that religion historically provided was psychological certainty. The confident assurance — grounded in divine revelation — that the fundamental questions of human existence have definitive answers. That the universe is governed by a purposeful intelligence that cares about human beings. That death is not the end. That genuine justice will ultimately prevail.
These assurances were genuinely valuable. Human beings need — at a deep psychological level — the experience of living within a meaningful universe. The experience of genuine hope. The confidence that their individual lives matter in some framework larger than their own brief existence.
But the psychological certainty that traditional religion provided depended — for most people — on the social reinforcement of a community of believers and the cultural authority of institutions that could present their claims as settled truth.
As that social reinforcement weakens — as the cultural authority of religious institutions is challenged by the expanding availability of alternative perspectives — as modern scholarship makes the historical and textual complexity of sacred traditions increasingly visible — the psychological certainty that religion provided becomes increasingly difficult to maintain.
This does not mean that the genuine human needs that religious certainty addressed have disappeared. They have not. Human beings still need meaning. Still need hope. Still need the experience of living within a framework larger than their individual lives.
But the specific form of certainty that traditional religion provided — grounded in claims about supernatural reality that cannot be honestly verified — is no longer available to a growing proportion of the human population.

It can no longer provide the social cohesion it once provided for populations whose identity is no longer primarily shaped by shared religious community. And it can no longer provide the psychological certainty it once provided for human beings whose honest inquiry cannot be satisfied by claims that resist honest examination.
This is not a catastrophe. It is an opportunity.
The opportunity to build something genuinely adequate to the genuine needs that religion served — in forms that are honest about their foundations — inclusive of every human being — and continuously updated in response to genuine evidence about what is actually working.
That is THE HUMANITY SYSTEM.
Not the end of spiritual life.
Its genuine beginning.
For every human being.
Without exception.
Without condition.
